Marvallous Keene’s Last Meal: The Dayton Ohio Christmas Murders
Marvallous Keene was one of the 4 criminals who were part of the notorious killing spree known as the Dayton Ohio Christmas Murders. Born in a turbulent home, Keene faced numerous challenges that ultimately led to his involvement in a violent murder spree with his gang “The Downtown Posse”. In 1993, he was convicted for his role in multiple murders, robberies and car thefts that resulted in the deaths of 5 people. Before his execution in 2009, Keene requested a last meal of a Porterhouse steak with A1 sauce, Fried Jumbo Shrimp with cocktail sauce, French fries, onion rings, Pillsbury Dinner Rolls, a mango, 2 plums, a pound of white seedless grapes, German chocolate cake, 2 bottles of Pepsi and 2 bottles of A&W Cream Soda. The rest of the “Posse” are still serving their life sentences today.

NOTE*** This is the order I cooked the meal in the episode. Every episode I have to find a way to make the meal so everything is as fresh as possible when I sit down to eat. The recipe can get confusing at times but this is the best way to prepare this meal so you can eat everything as fresh and as hot as possible!
Step 1 Cake (The Day Before)
Start by adding all the dry ingredients to a medium sized bowl: All Purpose Flour, Granulated Sugar, Cocoa Powder, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Salt. Whisk to Combine. Then add all the wet ingredients to the dry: Eggs, Buttermilk, Water, Vegetable Oil, Vanilla Extract. Mix to Combine. Grease 2 - 9 inch cake pans and pour the cake batter evenly into both pans. Bake at 350 Degrees F for 30-35 minutes.
In a medium sauce pot, melt the butter. When melted add in the sugar and brown sugar and whisk to combined. After smooth, add the evaporated milk, egg yolks and vanilla extract. Continuously whisk and cook for 10-15 minutes until thick and colored. Fold in the coconut flakes and chopped pecans and let cool completely.
Once the filling and cakes are cool it’s time to assemble. Cut the top of one cake and add half the filling to the top. Place the other cake on top and add the rest of the filling on top of the second cake. Optionally add chocolate icing the the sides of the cake to make it look better. Any store bought frosting would work.
Step 2 (The Next Day)
Peel your potato and cut into your desired fry size with a serrated knife. Add the fries to cold water but don’t let them soak. Wash and rinse the fries 2-3 times until the water is clear. Add the fries to a large pot. Add enough water to cover the fries and add in the vinegar and salt, just like pasta water. Place the pot over medium heat and bring to a boil. Cook the fries until fork tender but not mushy. You want them to maintain their structure. Let those steam dry. Heat a pot of oil to 400 degrees F. Once the fries are completely dry, add them to the oil in small batches and cook for 60 seconds. Place on a paper towel lined pan and let them sit for at least 30 minutes
While the fries are boiling, I found to be the perfect to cut the mango and set up my fruit plate so it’s ready to go. (I absolutely destroyed the mango trying to cut it so please watch a proper video on how to cut mangos cause I had a tough time figuring it out lol)
Step 3
Next, open your Pillsbury rolls and cook them as directed on packaging. 375 degrees F for 13-15 minutes.
Step 4
While the oven is heating up and the rolls are cooking, is the best time to cook the steak. Place a cast iron skillet over high heat until the pan is HOTTTTT! Salt and Pepper both sides of your steak. Spray a small sprits of cooking oil and sear the steak for 3-4 minutes. *Cooking time will vary based on thickness and desired internal temperature, my recipe will cook the steak to a medium and is about 1.5 inches thick* Next sear all the edges of the steak to lock in that flavor and juice! Flip the steak and add in the butter, fresh thyme and garlic cloves. Tilt the pan and baste the steak for 3-5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let it rest for 10 minutes minimum! Add more butter on top if desired!
Step 5
Rolls should be done at this point in your cooking timeline. In a small bowl, melt the butter and add the honey. Brush the rolls with the honey butter and set aside.
Step 6
Slice the onion into thick rings. Next in a medium bowl whisk together the flour, cornstarch salt and pepper. Then add in enough water to make it almost runny *See Episode for Example*. In another bowl add in the breadcrumbs. Dip the onion rings into the batter then the panko and set aside.
Now we need to bread the shrimp as well. In the same batter used for the rings, add in 1 Tbsp Cajun seasoning, lemon pepper and MSG and mix well. In another bowl of breadcrumbs add the other 1 Tbsp of Cajun seasoning and mix, Batter the shrimp and coat in the breadcrumbs.
Fry both the shrimp and the onions rings at 350 degrees F until golden brown and crispy.
While this is cooking get a big slice of the German chocolate cake and set aside.
Step 7
Heat the oil from 350 to 400 degrees F and fry the French fries until golden brown and crispy. Salt to taste immediately after taking them out of the oil.
Step 8
Plate the food, grab some A1, cocktail sauce and the Pepsi and Cream Soda and ENJOY!!
