Billy Bailey: The Last Man Hanged in America and How to Cook his Last Meal πŸ₯©πŸ₯”πŸ«›πŸžπŸ¦

Billy Bailey, the last man hanged in American history, was executed on January 25, 1996, in Delaware. He was convicted of the murder of elderly couple, Gilbert and Clara Lambertson, during a robbery. Bailey spent nearly two decades on death row before facing his ultimate punishment. Despite numerous appeals and pleas for clemency, Bailey's sentence was carried out, marking the end of an era in American capital punishment. This case seemed especially barbaric since he chose hanging after the state changed to lethal injection. Billy stated β€œAsking a man to choose how to die is more barbaric than hanging.” His story serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and moral dilemmas surrounding the death penalty in the United States along with questions on how to better help the people who grew up in a cycle of β€œfilth and poverty.”

Vanilla Ice Cream

Base

2 Cups Whole Milk

1 Cup Heavy Cream

1 Cup Sugar

1 tsp Salt

6 Eggs Yokes

Finish

1 Cup Heavy Cream

Step 1

Let’s make the roll dough. Heat the whole milk to about 110℉ or 43℃. Add the milk, yeast, half the sugar and salt into a stand up mixer bowl and let sit for 5 minutes until fermented. When the yeast has bubbled up, add in the egg, the other half of sugar, and 1 cup of the flour and mix with a kneed hook to combine. Once combined, add the rest of the flour and kneed in the mixer until smooth, about 3-5 minutes. Roll the dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl and cover until doubled in size.

Step 2

Now to start the ice cream. To a medium-large pot, add the whole milk, 1 cup of the heavy cream (half), sugar and salt and place on medium heat. Get this mixture very hot but do not boil this! Once this happens, cover with a lid and place to the side for 45 minutes. Once you’ve waited, place the pot back onto a medium heat and reheat the mixture and don’t let it go over 170℉ or 77℃. Next crack the eggs and separate the yolks. Temper the egg yolks by adding a couple ladles of the hot mixture into the eggs and whisking together. This will warm up the egg yolks. Add that into the pot and heat until thickened, you should be able to draw a line on the back of a spoon with your finger (see episode). Now take a very large bowl and fill it with ice and water to make an ice bath. Take a smaller bowl and place that into the ice bath and add in the other 1 cup of heavy cream. Now add the custard into the small bowl with the heavy cream and whisk to combine. Let this sit on the ice bath until completely chilled.

Step 3

In the meantime, the dough should be raised. Place your dough on a work surface and cut the dough and pieces in half 4 times, this should be 16 pieces of dough. Roll all those into balls and place in a greased 9x13 in pan with some space the raise again. Grease the tops and cover until doubled.

Step 4

Set your oven to 425℉ or 218℃. Wash the russet potato and then stab with a knife or fork all over, this will prevent an exploding tater. Cover with oil and salt and pepper the top. Place this into your oven and bake for 45 minutes - 1 hour or until fork tender and fluffy.

Step 5

Let’s make the steak sauce. In a small bowl add in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, onion and garlic powder, vinegar and hot sauce. Whisk to combine and set aside.

Step 6

The ice cream mixture should be chilled. Time to make the ice cream! The ice cream base should be completely cooled and for simplicity reasons, just follow the directions on whatever ice cream machine you will be using. I know there are a lot of modern ice cream makers however I use a traditional one that spins in a big bucket of ice. In that case make sure your metal base is placed in the freezer overnight. Fill that will the ice cream base and then fill your machine with ice and ice cream salt. Turn that baby on and patiently wait for this delicious ice cream to be done!

Step 7

Again, while we’re in the middle of tasks, lets make the honey butter. Melt the butter and add in the honey and stir to combine. Simple! Somewhere around this time as well, the potato should be done. In that case, remove the potato and wrap in foil the keep warm. Reduce the oven temperature to 350℉ or 176℃. Also, salt and pepper your steak generously. Yes this is an odds and ends type of step lol.

Step 8

The ice cream should be close to done. When it is, scoop ice cream into a freezer safe container and freeze overnight to harden, or enjoy soft served!

Step 9

The oven should have dropped temp, so place the rolls in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden. Remove from the oven and generously brush with the honey butter!

Step 10

Time to cook the steak and this is crucial! First place a cast iron pan over a medium high heat and get that pan HOT! Once hot, firmly place the steak onto the pan and don’t touch it again for 4 minutes (if you like medium rare-medium cooked steak, adjust cook time as desired). Once seared, turn the steak over and sear for another minute. Next add in 4-5 Tbsp of butter, garlic cloves, and fresh thyme and baste that steak for 2-3 minutes. Once done place onto a serving tray or cutting board and pour the browned butter all over and let that baby rest for 5 minutes MINIMUM!

Step 11

Heat the peas over a medium heat until warmed and plate. Slice open your baked potato and add in sour cream and butter. Plate the steak, with the steak sauce, grab some rolls and scoop the ice cream! It’s time to eat πŸ˜‹
